Sustainability is gaining momentum in the business world and SMEs find themselves at a crossroads. While SMEs are not directly regulated, the mounting pressure from large clients, driven by frameworks like the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) and Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), is starting to force them to reevaluate their business. SMEs should make a start with ESG.

A recent study by KPMG US found that many companies are trying to improve their sustainability reporting. However, about half of these companies are still using basic spreadsheets for the management of their ESG activities. While this is happening, pressure for businesses to become more eco-friendly and more socially responsible is also increasing. The KPMG survey, which was given to 550 leaders in mostly European companies, showed a large gap between what companies think they are doing well and what they're actually doing in terms of ESG reporting. Recent research by Argos Wityu and Boston Consulting Group has revealed a hidden opportunity for small businesses (SMEs). While many large companies are working to become more sustainable by reducing their carbon emissions, SMEs do not feel the same urgency. In fact, only 38% of all SMEs are taking measures to reduce their CO2 emissions, and even fewer have a structured plan to do so. This is surprising, as going green also facilitates financial and commercial benefits. Although overall CO2 emissions have dropped due to rising energy prices, this finding raises an important question: are SMEs aware of the significant role they can play in the sustainability transition?
